Very Rev. Paul D. Counce

Our pastor since 2009, Father Paul Counce, is a Louisiana native, born in New Orleans in 1953. He was educated at Our Lady of Mercy and St. Joseph Cathedral Prep Schools in Baton Rouge and at St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict, Louisiana. After graduate seminary education at the Catholic University of Louvain in Leuven, Belgium, he was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Baton Rouge in 1979. He did further graduate studies in canon law at St. Paul University and the University of Ottawa in Canada.

Within the diocese he has served since 1989 as Judicial Vicar, and from 1988 to 2009 as Vice-Chancellor. For 35 years he has been a member of the Presbyteral Council, and was its Chairman in 2000-2003. He is a member of the diocesan College of Consultors. He also has served as parochial vicar in Gonzales and in Pierre Part, as parish administrator in Gonzales, Grosse Tête and St. Gabriel, and as pastor of St. Pius X Parish as well as St. Joseph Cathedral. He has also taught in the diocesan Religious Studies Institute and diaconal formation programs, and at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. In 2007-2008 he served as national President of the Canon Law Society of America.
