Advent: A Time of Preparation

Catholics do not celebrate Christmas in a hurried, materialistic, secular way. Instead we follow the Biblical imperative to "Prepare the Way of the Lord" with purpose and prayer.

Deacon Gary C. Mooney
Deacon Assistant

Born in New Orleans on February 8, 1960, Gary Mooney’s family moved to Baton Rouge when he was young. He attended Saint Thomas More School in Baton Rouge, Saints Simon and Jude School in Huntington Beach, Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, and Broadmoor Senior High in Baton Rouge. He went on to attend the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette and New York State University, eventually graduating from the Southern University Law School.

He is married to the former Suzanne Quinlan of New Orleans (also an attorney with the State Board of Ethics); they have four children and two grandchildren. Prior to his ordination Sue and he were active members of St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish in Saint Gabriel.

A veteran of both the US Army and US Navy with over 27 years of combined service, he was deployed to Afghanistan in 2002. He earned a Bronze Star in a combat deployment serving as an Intelligence Officer in Iraq in 2008. His primary service in the Army has been with the Judge Advocate General’s office, providing legal assistance.

One of his hobbies is languages: he has knowledge of French, German, Spanish, Italian, and now (due to his diaconal studies!) Latin!

He was ordained a deacon on June 10, 2017, and as of July 1, 2017, is assigned as part-time Deacon Assistant to St. Joseph Cathedral Parish. He also will serve as one of the part-time deacon chaplains at Dixon Correctional Facility in Jackson, Louisiana.
